Trendwatch: Beauty Foods & Inside Out Beauty

They are called beauty food or inside out beauty products. And they are going to be huge.

The concept is simple: As nutrition affects our physical appearance, it was only logical to go a step further than just eating your leafy green vegetables and infuse drinks, snacks, even candy with proven skincare ingredients. In Asia, the idea to "eat yourself beautiful" has a long history, and many restaurants in Japan, or instance, have been serving collegen drinks to their customers for years. In the US, Nestlé's Glowelle was one of the first "inside out" products to enter the market about one year ago. (This drink that boasts antioxidants, botanicals, and fruit extracts and has what can be called an acquired taste promises to make your skin glow within 30 days.)

At HBA, New York's largest beauty conferences, I had the chance to eat and drink my way through about a dozen beauty foods.

Here are my two favorites:

Collagen Fruit: How genius is that? Taking dried fruits that are already healthy and coating them with collagen so my skin gets a little fresher and supple with every nibble. To me, this is so exciting, and believable, as it combines ingredients that I understand to be good for me anyway. (I'm not so sure about chocolate that claims to fight acne or haven't you been told that chocolate is the very culprit in causing unsightly blemishes?) I will try a bag of collagen fruit as soon as it hits the market in the US (it's a South Korean product) and report back.

Ingestible Perfume: All of us who like a garlicky dish know that what you eat can affect how you smell. Luckily, it works or nicer frangrances too. I cannot speak from experience as I tried only one of the rose-flavored, fudge-like pieces of candy, but I heard someone say that they ate a whole (small) bag and surely enough, exuded a rosey fragrant after a while. I'm particularly excited about this as I love to really own my perfumes and I imagine those ingestible perfumes to give you a subtle personal aura rather than those impossible-to-ignore perfume shrouds that this person next to you on the subway sometimes wears. Can I please have something that smells like cucumber and lotus? Thank you.
